AAPC Coding Certification Program
Our Program-
To meet our national shortage of certified coders across the country that is required for coding data quality improvement goals; reducing coding and data collection costs, we provide a sound training platform for all future coding and compliance training requirements.
“ITS” instructors provide the highest quality medical coding training services available anywhere through its team of certified, experienced and medical specialty trained coding Instructors. We have experience providing coding certification programs to the Office of the Inspector General-Medicaid Fraud Unit, the Nursing Audit team of Palmetto Insurance and various government groups across the country in addition to individual students. Our pass rate for our Instructors is 98%
Our Education Model
Our approach to standardize coder training allows for a web-based program through our proprietary web-based video conferencing system. Our experience has shown that courses offered through an on-line, learn as you go approach does not allow for questions to be asked at the time of the training. Students retain and perform much better with immediate feedback. We do however record the training sessions so they student can review the presentation at any time as a reference resource.
A secondary benefit to our program is that it does not require the staff to leave the office and eliminate productivity issues. Our courses are offered through the day, evenings and weekends. No travel expenses, no hotel or meal expenses. Training in your pajamas!

This course is design For students that have no experience in coding the 8 week course is recommended. Those students who pass the exam will receive a certification without the "apprentice" label that may offer some restrictions on employment.
Curriculum:
- Medical Coding and Compliance
Medical coding terminology and issues are introduced, including the meaning and importance of a compliance program in a medical setting. The significance of accuracy, ethics, and continuing education are emphasized. - Anatomy and Word Elements (terminology)
Basic human anatomy is provided and reviewed. The meanings of medical and surgical terms are reviewed and how they are broken down for interpretation. - Documentation and Coding Guidelines
Accurate documentation of procedures and services is paramount for coding and reimbursement. In this chapter, students will be introduced to the rules and guidelines necessary. - ICD-9-CM Coding
Diagnostic coding through medical necessity, coding guidelines, and how-to steps are presented along with coding conventions, coding tips, and understanding ICD-9-CM Volumes 1 and 2. An addendum introduces the ICD-10 for[client name], which is informational only and not included in the CPC examination. - CPT® and HCPCS Coding
Understanding CPT® and HCPCS codes in relation to reporting physician and/or other provider procedures and services are discussed. This chapter also introduces the basics of for[client name]ting, terminology, modifiers, and the two levels of HCPCS codes used in Medicare and most private payer claims.
- Evaluation and Management –Principles
Evaluation and management (E/M) codes are described with the fundamentals in preparation and application to medical claims. Each section explains a topic pertinent to E/M coding such as the definitions of key components, reporting consultations, emergency department visits, critical care, preventive medicine, and home health services. - Evaluation and Management – Supplemental Information
From the basics of E/M coding, the students advance to actual reporting of these codes based on provider information. A step-by-step approach to E/M auditing is presented with the various types of audits common to medical practices. - Anesthesia & Modifiers
A discussion of the ASA relative values, anesthesia guidelines, modifiers, code organization and crosswalk, as well as a review of the different types of anesthesia available for patients and the methods in which they are administered, are covered in this chapter. - Surgery Guidelines and Concepts
Surgical codes are arranged in sections according to body systems (e.g., integumentary, digestive), which are divided according to the type of procedure performed. The AMA’s coding modifiers and coding guidelines are defined.
- Integumentary System
Descriptions of each section of surgery codes are in-depth and begin with the integumentary system. Definitions and anatomical descriptions give an overview of these code ranges, which are updated annually to reflect any changes in health care. - Musculoskeletal System
One of the largest sets of codes in the CPT® is the musculoskeletal system. The application, relevant definitions, anatomical descriptions, and an overview of the various procedures are demonstrated. - Respiratory System
Students are introduced to respiratory diseases with subsequent treatment and the functions of the system’s organs. The respiratory system codes with the application and proper documentation are defined. - Digestive System
This chapter covers the digestive process, diagnostic tests and procedures, and endoscopies pertaining to the digestive system. - Urinary System
The urinary system range of the CPT® manual includes codes specific to males and females and explores the general concepts and anatomy of the urinary system as well as the anatomy and consequent services and procedures specific to each gender - Reproductive Systems, Delivery, and Maternity
Three sections of CPT® codes are reviewed in this chapter of the Step by Step. The chapter reviews the male genital and female genital system. - Endocrine and Nervous System
This chapter covers coding procedures and techniques of the skull, meninges and the brain, spine and spinal cord, extracranial nerves, peripheral nerves, and the autonomic nervous system.
